Review: Miles to Go (Walk #2) by Richard Paul Evans

4.5 stars for Miles to Go (Walk book 2) by Richard Paul Evans.

Miles to Go documents the second journal of our protagonist, a thirty-two-year-old Alan Christoffersen's walk. A walk that originates from the departure of his beloved significant other and one which gradually evolves to tell a story of contrasts - living versus dying, hope versus despair, pain versus healing, past versus future and nowhere versus everywhere; a physical as well as spiritual walk.

Alan's serendipitous encounter with a girl named Angel keeps him going, and in due course he heals himself and finds peace within. Though I find Angel's own story exaggerated and extreme to the point of unbelievable, the overall story is still very touching and heartwarming.

In the course of continuing his walk after recovering from an injury and bidding farewell to Angel, Alan's path crosses with that of a youth aging out of foster care, Kailamai, and he proceeds to tell of how they form a comfortable walking companionship. I love the brilliant way in which the author rounds up the story with Kailamai and places her where she belongs in the long run.

All in all, Miles to Go is an inspirationally heartening story on self-actualization; a journey that is not meant as an escape from the past but rather a link to the future with each baby step an act of hope and confirmation that life is worth living.

I was lonely but not alone - my companions were despair, loneliness, and fear. And they were a talkative bunch.

Alan Christoffersen, a once-successful advertising executive, wakes one morning to find himself injured, alone, and confined to a hospital bed in Spokane, Washington. Sixteen days earlier, reeling from the sudden loss of his wife, his home, and his business, Alan left everything he knew behind and set off on an extraordinary cross-country journey. Carrying only a backpack, he planned to walk to Key West, the farthest destination on his map. But a vicious roadside stabbing has interrupted Alan’s trek and robbed him of his one source of solace: the ability to walk.

Homeless and facing months of difficult recovery, Alan has nowhere to turn—until a mysterious woman enters his life and invites him into her home. Generous and kind, Angel seems almost too good to be true, but all is not as it appears. Alan soon realizes that before he can return to his own journey, he must first help Angel with hers.

From one of America’s most beloved and bestselling storytellers comes an astonishing tale of life and death, love and second chances, and why sometimes the best way to heal your own suffering is by helping to heal someone else’s. Inspiring, moving, and full of wisdom, Miles to Go picks up where the bestseller The Walk left off, continuing the unforgettable series about one man’s unrelenting search for hope.
